As is the case for the last few years, the 1st W Club Exclusive doll of the 2024 membership year was revealed in the beginning of August, via e-mail to members. The doll is none other than Baby Blue Imogen Lennox, who has not been seen since 2017 and her Heirloom appearance. IT designer Jessy Ayala not only gives Imogen Lennox a new facial screening but also includes her pet kitten, Blue, in the mini gift set.

The story:

In the heart of Paris, one NU. Face agency's top model and influencer; Imogen Lennox; is stepping back into the limelight with a fresh project: launching "Wonderland", a new makeup brand created in collaboration with W Cosmetics and inspired by the whimsical world of Alice in Wonderland! The brand’s signature colour is baby blue, and Imogen is dressed by the stylists to embody its spirit with a touch of sparkle and flawless makeup to add some modernity to the campaign.

Accompanied by her playful kitten, Blue, Imogen prepared for the grand publicity campaign under the watchful eye of her new collaborator, Véronique Perrin. The studio had been transformed into a magical wonderland, filled with oversized tea cups and pastel lights.

As the photo shoot began, Imogen’s graceful poses and Blue’s spontaneous antics captured the enchanting essence of Wonderland. The resulting images were nothing short of magical, perfectly reflecting the brand’s dreamlike quality.

At the end of the day, Véronique and Imogen admired the stunning photos. “You and Blue brought Wonderland to life,” Véronique said, beaming with pride. Imogen smiled, holding baby Blue close. Seeing Imogen as the first W Club doll of the year was a great and welcome surprise. Seeing her being so incredibly beautiful and smashing was even better. I love everything about her, from her new screening with the larger eyes, her awesome hairstyle (which reminds me of Sandy in Grease, if it took place ten years later) and her outfit. Consisting of a multitude of pieces, it not only looks cool and amazing, it also gives you many different combinations. The flower sequins look the same as those on the Hippie Dippy Poppy dress. Did I mention that the bow has a magnet for attaching it however and wherever you like? The chubby faux fur coat? The kitten (which is a very early prototype)? Jessy said he was inspired by Alice in Wonderland, hence the colours and the kitten and the Mary Janes. And it is the 60s through the 90s through now. The club sleuths quickly figured out the real fashion world outfit inspiration: Miu Miu Fall/Winter 2022. And how about her face? We can see echoes of the first ever Giselle (Costume Drama), the Style Lab Fashion Fairy-tale Tulabelle (wearing an Alice in Wonderland outfit), And from real people, she looks a lot like a young Cameron Diaz or even Florence Henderson (and yes Florence could pass as Cameron’s mum).

The accessories are also amazing. We get both high heeled and flat feet, to go with the thigh high boots and the Mary Jane shoes. The silver elongated bag is fantastic and looks inspired by the Miu Miu Arcadie bag. Love the round sunglasses. Plenty of jewellery to pile on, with many bracelets and two pairs of earrings, plus two rings. I could not press the pre-order button fast enough. I have loved Imogen from her very first appearance (and still kick myself for not getting that one but there were so many dolls released at the same time it was impossible), so it was a no-brainer. See below a video of the rotating doll. There was mention of the doll having retouched eyes in the photos and indeed they do look tampered with 0 but check the video to see her real eyes. I guess they did not look exactly as planned, even though they do look great in the video - to my eyes at least.

Let me start by stating that I am no big fan of mermaid dolls. The are fun to look at but to me they are too cutesy and veer too close to playline, no matter the usual design and colouring, which usually fits into stereotypes: blonde hair, blue eyes, rainbow/sea foam colours, lots of pearls, long wavy hair. Unfortunately this one checks all stereotypes.Bering Greek, and Generation X, I grew up with mermaids (Sirens) being ancient Greek mythical creatures that lured sailors to their death with their irresistible song. The only alternative to that was Alexander the Great’s sister, who roamed the seas, asking ships if her brother was alive. If sialors replied no, she sunk the ship, if yes, she was happy to let them go. So mermaids were demonic creatures that brought despair and destruction to ships, not the cute ladies we keep seeing nowadays. Disney definitely had a lot to do with this transformation, as even the original Little Mermaid tale by Hans-Christian Andersen is quite different from the cartoon/real life remakes that studio has done. 

As you can tell from the previous paragraph, I was not awed by the last W Club doll of 2023. My collection veers towards fashion, even when the actual doll is based on real or fantastic persons/characters, and the only mermaid I have in it was a gift from the office secret Santa. 

Violaine is a beautiful doll, no doubt about that, ans I am really happy for those of you who waited years for such a doll to appear in Nu Fantasy. I would have preferred a more fashion styled doll like the OOAK Siren Rayna that Jessy had done for the Fashion Fairytale convention in 2017. That one used the theme as a base to create an incredibly gorgeous doll with a more avantguard look and feel. Violaine has lovely make up but not something unusual, apart from not having applied eyelashes, as Jessy did not find the suitable shade of blue he wanted to match his concept - and I totally understand that. Her hair looks like iridescent noodles to me, I’d have liked something more like the OOAK Rayna mentioned before.

Her non-mermaid fashions are based on a Versace Spring-Summer 2022 skirt (the sort ruffled one) and a David Koma Spring-Summer 2023 ensemble (starfish bra and short skirt with feather marabou train). The mermaid bra is inspired by old chandeliers, like the ones one could find in an old grand ship wreckage like the Titanic. She has the flat feet set to wear the iridescent mermaid tail and the high heeled one to wear either thigh high gold boots or pearl encrusted high heeled sandals. The mermaid ears with pearl clusters are probably the best thing about the accessories, as well as the conch shell clutch, which is functional. The stand base mimics a shell, making this look even more play-line, but has two alternatives, depending on whether you display the doll with or without the mermaid tail. Again, I am happy for all you people that wanted this doll so much, but for me it’s a hard pass.

The 4th W Club doll of the year is Redefined Luxury Kyori Sato!

The 4th W Club Exclusive doll of the 2023 membership year was eagerly expected by members, as we had been tipped by Carol Roth that the doll would be a love letter to collectors and be something really exquisite. And, lo and behold, it's not just a love letter to collectors, it harkens back to the legendary early Fashion Royalty gift sets and, as an added bonus, it features the highly-anticipated return of a collector favourite character: Kyori Sato returns as Redefined Luxury. Designed by Jessy Ayala, the doll comes with three different outfits plus a lingerie set and a suite of jewellery. Furthermore, it comes in a special case instead of the normal box, that is similar to the old style gift set cases. It was shown by Alain during the live presentation, but there was no relevant photo in the email.

The ever-elusive Kyori was spotted by fans in Tokyo after months of being out of the spotlight of the Parisian social scene. She was reportedly seen going into private meetings with some of the most prestigious jewelry houses in Ginza. While speculation ran wild about what she was up to, little did everyone know, she was just doing some last minute bauble shopping before making her grand return to Paris (and... maybe sprinkling in a little rendezvous with a mystery person before she came back)!

To say that she’s a jaw-dropping doll would be an understatement! If all the people watching the online live presentation were in the same room at the moment of unveiling, there would have been heard a collective gasp. What a great way to not only bring Kyori 1.0 sculpt back, but also give an exquisite doll to W Club members. I’m partial to this sculpt of the character versus the newer version, so it is an added joy to have this doll offered. Her face screening was based on the A Brighter Side Kyori screening (she was a FAO Schwartz exclusive in 2007) and her hairstyle looks to me as a more refined version of Bueno Sera Kyori’s. Jessy characterised it as “old money” hair, but the truth is that bobbed hair cuts are all the rage lately.

The rest of the gift set is a lift off the legendary Ginza Kyori Sato gift set, which came in a case much like the one this set will come in and had four look plus the lingerie set. It follows the colouring and vaguely the styling but it is not a direct copy with different colours, which for me is an added bonus. I find the fashions in this set much better than the old ones. The outfits are redefined luxury galore: the gown and coat are both from Schiaparelli, from the Fall 2023 and Spring 2023 Haute Couture collections respectively. The gown can have the top styled it two different ways, with the netting up or down, which is awesome. The coat would have looked better quilted (and the fastening at the back looked more prominent), but it is visually striking as is. The suit is almost a hybrid: the jacket is definitely Gaultier Haute Couture Spring 2023, designed by Haider Ackermann, while the skirt looks a bit like the style done by Versace for Anne Hathaway’s gown at the Met Gala in 2023, as a homage to Karl Lagerfeld. It looks amazing. The lingerie set could be missing and I would not bat an eyelid, but the jewellery is magnificent and some of the pieces are in gorgeous jewellery cases. The Chanel style bag is beautiful but there’s no clutch for the gown. Love the boots and pumps.

The price is quite steep (the original Ginza gift sets were $220 back in 2004 and were limited to 500 for the blonde and 100 for the redhead dolls), but you get lots of great stuff for it, and a gorgeous doll to boot. I am curious to see how many order her, as the praise has been almost unanimous.

When In Paris Poppy Parker is the 3rd W Club doll of 2023!

The 3rd W Club Exclusive doll of the 2023 membership year was revealed just before Christmas. It is a mini gift set reminiscent of early Poppy Parker dolls and there's an extra-long pre-order window to accommodate the holiday season, as Integrity Toys will be closed until after New Year’s. IT designer David Buttry brings us Poppy Parker as a young ingenue returning for an important ad campaign in Paris.

The Story:

Poppy Parker returns to the City of Light, but this time, it’s for the Noir Cosmetics ad campaign, to unveil a brand new companion makeup line for their iconic “When in Paris” fragrance!

Feeling light and carefree on the way to the photo shoot, Poppy grabbed her favourite dotted trench and wore it over a very chic, sleek black turtleneck and cropped trousers combo, which of course landed her on the pages of all the top French fashion magazines, making her fans scramble to copy the look!

Once she finally got to the studio, there was a lot of back and forth regarding the perfect gown she would wear in the ads, but everyone soon agreed that only Poppy’s friend Monsieur Mignon, her "go to" couturier, could pull this off! Monsieur was thrilled to recreate one of her most coveted dresses in black while adding some delicate embellishments, making the gown even more special for his favourite client! It was just what the Noir campaign needed, and the perfect look for Poppy to cast her charms on her French fans for the second time. When in Paris, indeed!

She’s a recoloured version of Friend or Foe Poppy Parker, from the gift set when Ginger made her first appearance, which was back in December 2019 - so it is another Moment for Poppy. I like the dress better in black, it makes it surely more Parisian and more sophisticated, but, as you see in the photo below and will not hear or read about it anywhere from Integrity Toys…

…the doll is a double throwback: she’s got the screening of the Audrey Hepburn Sabrina dolls, which I mostly have - and they look so much better than she does, mainly because of the hairstyle and the red lipstick. The photo above mimics an Audrey classic from Breakfast At Tiffany’s, which was remade by Steven Meisel with Christy Turlington. If I did not have any of those dolls, I’d grab this one right away. Not now though. The black beatnik outfit is a typical Audrey look from both Sabrina (IT released a version there in the Most Sophisticated gift set) and Funny Face (which looks more like this one). The make up and perfume accessories have been seen before many times.

One of the most beautiful Nadja dolls ever created, she is smashing! I am so glad she is a W Club doll and we do not have to go through hoops to acquire her. Every element of the doll and her outfits comes together perfectly and looks amazing and very cohesive. The black top and skirt look a lot like this Blumarine Spring/Summer 2022 ensemble - and of course we all know the original butterfly top by Ungaro, worn by Mariah Carey in the VH1 Divas 2000 tribute to Diana Ross. The red dress could either be inspired by some outfits with asymmetrical necklines in the same 2022 Blumarine collection or this year’s Spring Summer collection that features a similar asymmetrical transparent black version. The transparent bag, that we have seen before, is of course the Coperni Glass Swipe bag. The black bag is Aupen’s Fearless model. I could not find the belt anywhere, did anyone else? Would look amazing as a necklace too. The dolls reminds me of Zendaya and also Adut Akech, She’s definitely a keeper.
