Integrity Toys 2024 convention - Stilettos Out day 2: Poppy Parker luncheon

The country that attendees of the 2024 convention found themselves in on the 2nd day, according to the clues given to them, was"Switzerland" (the previous evening they were in Monaco). Participants of the Poppy Parker Luncheon found out that "Bird Of Prey" Poppy Parker, designed by David Buttry, was the event's centerpiece doll. During the event, two additional convention items were revealed for attendees to purchase, the "Drop Dead Gorgeous" Tulabelle True doll and the "Crack The Code" Spy Accessory Pack, also designed by David.Finally, attendees learned about their "Illusive Beauty" Poppy Parker giveaway doll, designed by David Buttry, along with the final accessory set for Donna Drake's "Cryptic Cases" gift set, designed by Alain Tremblay. Next stop was “Morocco” and the Fashion Bazaar, giving everyone a chance to purchase stuff from other attendees and also strut down the runway, showing off their modelling skills.

Beautiful Poppy doll, which compliments nicely the Après-Ski Asset Poppy that was available also for non attendee club members. I am not crazy about how the lower part of the jumpsuit looks, it seems frumpy even on promo photos. The inspiration is from an Yves Saint-Laurent look from his 1968 Spring/Summer collection.

After all the other convention Poppies, she feels a bit like a letdown. She is a bit bland and washed out, closer to Barbie then any Poppy we have seen so far - and what about the Action Accents Barbie set?. The jumpsuit (again!) colours help solidify this a lot. Emma Peel is of course a major inspiration for Poppy, as we have seen lots of times before here and here, with much better results.

Integrity Toys 2024 convention - Stilettos Out day 1: The convention collection and welcome doll

This year, Integrity Toys decided that it was about time they returned to an in-person convention, instead of the virtual online events they organized from 2020 onward, because of the pandemic. It sold out as is always the case with the IT events. They did a rehearsal last year with the Curated event (which was sold out as well but it left much to be desired in the organization department). So you can imagine that all club members, even the ones not attending, held their breath waiting for the event to start.

And then the unexpected happened: attendees received an email, about a week from the event, that the dolls for the convention had not arrived and would not be at the hotel, due to a combination of port workers three-day strike, the repeated hurricanes striking US east coast etc. Instead, attendees would have to make do with the prototype dolls on display, a QR code system to place their orders on-site. The dolls would ship to the attendees homes after the event and the company would supply gift cards as credit for the shipping costs. The furore of the club members was such (plus pointing out a clause in the terms and conditions of the convention ticket that specified free shipping in case the dolls were not delivered at the event), that IT had to change course and give real free shipping to all attendees. Of course those attending that come outside the US still have to pay taxes /custom duties when dolls are shipped to them instead of travelling back in their suitcase, and that is quite an extra cost to shoulder. The overall tone of the email did not help, as it was far from apologetic and more like “oops! we had an accident, no biggie”. The fact that the company waits until the very last week before an event to receive their merchandise for it shows poor planning. Even people like me, outside the US, knew about the hurricane season troubles, even the planned port workers strike. Also, since the pandemic, shipping keeps having serious problems with being on time (not that it did not have any before, but…), so it is always prudent to plan ahead of time. Anyway, let’s hope that all this will be seriously addressed at some point in the convention, directly from IT to their loyal, hard cash earned paying customers face to face.

In

So, on with the show - what is the Stilettos Out story all about? As per the club email:

Many highly sought-after, ultra-rare artefacts have disappeared all over the world and no one, not even the savviest, most fashionable detectives from the the SSB (Secret Style Bureau) and other covert agencies like FPI (Fashion Police International) have been able to figure out how these seemingly disconnected items are related! This year’s convention attendees were invited to participate in this intriguing mystery, tasked to help fictional true crime podcaster/blogger Donna Drake collect clues that will ultimately solve this decades-old cold case!

On the first day of the event, attendees arrived for registration (with early registration taking place on the previous day) and received their welcome bag, which included a mysterious dossier with some clues, and also learned they were getting a Welcome Gift Set, seeing the first part, the "Cryptic Cases" Imogen Lennox as Donna Drake doll, to be completed with more clothes and accessories during the event. The whole thing is part of the clue searching, as she’s the investigating agent all attendees must help uncover the mystery. Below, you can see the Welcome Gift Set doll as well as the Convention Collection dolls, available for attendees at the Souvenir Shop along with the NU. Face Seven Style Lab, which will be in the next article.

She does remind me of Be Daring Imogen 2016 club upgrade doll and also the Tropicalia 2012 convention had Imogen as a welcome gift set too! She looks quite basic now, let’s see what else she will acquire during the event to complete her set - and solve the mystery perhaps?

Vanessa looks like an Old Hollywood screen siren here, like Ava Gardner or Jane Russel. Bombshell material! Her screening looks a bit off to me, as if she’s trying to imitate someone else - let’s say Natalia for example.The hairstyle contributes to that feeling as well.Love her opera glasses! The shoes, corsage and stiletto (this style of a dagger makes it a stiletto) could have been part of the Magia 2000 Vanessa, no?

Poppy Parker plays Leia Organa in Star Wars: The Fashion Movie! Her braided hairstyle, apart from the famous film icon, reminds me of the Tokyo Twilight Poppy. She has the Spicy in Spain screening. Do you remember the Style Lab 2018 convention collection? It was named Miss behave and had a build-a-doll Poppy Parker doll as gift if you had all the collection bought (her pieces were hidden inside the other doll/outfit boxes). Her outfit is very 60s era space age looks, like the ones made by Courrèges and Cardin.

A new version of Tate Tanaka is always good news. When I first saw online photos of this guy from the convention (the prototype doll displayed there), I was instantly smitten. After a while though I noticed two things that made me go hmmm - his bland screening and his huge forehead. When you name a character Raven, you should go that little bit towards the goth connotations, no? Some eyeliner, a stronger brow. The suit is kind of tame, if you take out the boots and leather cummerbund, but I like its texture, like a deconstructed tweed.

A lovely version of Constance, that somehow does not pass muster for a spy, even though she is holding a retro-futuristic gun and a finger cigarette holder. She’s more like a film noir heroine, who just murdered her cheating husband and is waiting for the sleuth protagonist to show up. I love the light blue stones of her jewellery set.

Who is the mysterious character embodied by Elyse? Do not google it, you’re in for a great laugh (or not, depending on your situation). Don;t they google the perspective names of characters before they trademark them? LOL. Anyway, she’s a gorgeous doll, with an amazing gown and quite an original screening for Elyse. it shows what you can do if you step, even just a bit, out of the so-called box. Great work Alain (he designed Imogen too). Having said that, she has very minimal accessories - and why aren’t the shoes photographed with the rest of them? She needed at least a bracelet and a ring.

Pink of Perfection is the 15th anniversary Poppy Parker doll!

You’d have to live under a rock to miss the fact that 2024 is the 15th anniversary of Poppy Parker. Who would have thought, back in 2009, that the then new doll would become the juggernaut she is today, dominating the releases and sales of Integrity Toys, and making David Buttry a very happy doll designer! Poppy has been travelling all over the world, making friends along the way, been in a relationship, on mystery dates, on amazing fashion shoots, in films and TV shows - you name it, she’s done it! And of course there would be a special anniversary doll to commemorate Poppy Parker's 15th, exlusive to W Club members.

I was expecting a bit more fanfare for this anniversary - just think that on the 5th anniversary there was also an IFDC collection alongside the club doll, plus the convention Poppy dolls which we will see quite soon.

The story:

Poppy Parker got all dolled up to attend what she thought was a surprise party for her frenemy Ginger Gilroy, but it turns out the surprise was on her, the party was for Poppy! When Poppy arrived at the door as a vision in pink to the sounds of all her friends and family shouting "Surprise" in unison, she was so touched that she turned perfectly pink herself and collapsed into the arms of Chip! He stayed at her side for the whole party to make sure she was okay, much to the dismay of Ginger! - Designed by David Buttry

Included:

  • 12-inch articulated doll with rooted hair and hand-applied eyelashes;

  • Adorable look comprised of a sweet pink strapless gown with bow detail and luscious layers of polka-dotted tulle;

  • Pantyhose;

  • Pink clutch;

  • Pink sling-back high-heeled pumps;

  • "Jeweled" pink and "diamond" necklace;

  • Matching oversized "jeweled" bracelet;

  • Matching "jeweled" earrings:

  • Pink opera-length arm gauntlets;

  • Pink gloved hands;

  • Alternate pair of Poppy Parker hands;

  • Doll stand;

  • Certificate of authenticity.

She’s a gorgeous doll. I love the strong dark eyebrows and eyeliner contrasting the light pink lipstick but would have preferred it on a cream skintone to better suit the pink tones of everything else. The hairstyle compliments the dress perfectly, and is suitable for her young age - an older woman would probably have an up-do with such a look back in those days. The dress is a Dior Spring 1956 haute couture gown named “Danse”. All its photos online are b&w, so I have no idea what colour was the original dress. I would probably have liked it a bit more in a different colour - the 5th anniversary Poppy wore pink, the 10th black, so we could have had light blue or green or even a bold fiery red! See her below in a video.

Poppy goes disco: The 2nd W CLub doll for 2024 is Star Muse Poppy Parker!

The 2nd W Club Exclusive doll of the 2024 membership year was revealed to members at the end of August: "Star Muse" Poppy Parker, designed by David Buttry, exclusively for W Club members, arrives not long after the first club doll of the year. The surprise is that she’s not in her regular era style (either late 50s-early 60s or mod 60s), not even her Charlie Angels 70s style. But more on that later on. Let’s check out the doll first.

The story:

Tension mounts on the set of Star Muse, a roller disco extravaganza staring young ingenue Poppy Parker, who has landed the lead role of a foxy professional roller skater who dreams about winning the Star Muse trophy, the top prize of the National Roller Disco Competition!

As the project started gaining traction, all of the attention our star was getting truly set off her frenemy; Ginger Gilroy; who was only cast in a secondary role!

Amid the turmoil, will Poppy’s fabulously colorful costumes and flashy new roller skates win everyone’s heart over? Can the two friends confront their differences and work through them to achieve their dreams of stardom and restore harmony? Of course they can and they will, it's easy; all they have to do is boogie! - Designed by David Buttry

Star_Muse_Poppy_Parker_Dressed Doll

As I mentioned above, Poppy is in a quite different era than we have seen so far. She’s veering towards end of the 70s/very early 80s era. She looks like a modern interpretation of Olivia Newton-John in Xanadu, ready to sing Magic while rolling around the club dancefloor. The hairstyle with the ribbon certainly alludes to that film, as well as the rollers and the general disco/bubblegum aesthetic. She also pulls from other stars of the era but has more modern influences as well. The star is a direct nod to the upgrade Ultraviolet Poppy. The screening is from Tears Go By.

Star_Muse_Poppy_Parker_Dressed Doll accessories

The most surprising thing about this doll is the price point. She’s the same price as the When In Paris Poppy, but that one had two complete outfits, also both pairs of legs and many more accessories than this one. And it was only months ago, so inflation and other excuses don’t cut it. The roller skates are not that expensive online ($20-$30) so what’s up Integrity? The clothes are not even that detailed to make up for any part of the cost. If she had an additional dress similar to those worn in Xanadu by Olivia, she’d be perfect and much sought after. I am getting her, but only because of the Olivia connection (thin as it is) and nothing more. Below is the video of the rotating doll.

The W Club exclusive 2024 Stilettos Out convention bonus doll is Après-Ski Asset Poppy Parker!

As everyone expected, the W Club announced a special 2024 Stilettos Out Convention bonus doll, with guaranteed pre-order opportunity for all current W Club members whether they are attending the 2024 convention or not. Every 2024 W Club member is guaranteed the right to pre-order up to one (1) doll per membership. This doll is an extra bonus offer in addition to and not included in the 5 W Club Exclusive dolls guaranteed at club registration. This doll will not be arriving in time for the convention, with delivery scheduled sometime this winter.

The doll is Poppy Parker, which was kind of expected, as she’s celebrating her 15th anniversary this year. The concept follows the convention theme, which draws but is not limited to, the Knives Out film franchise. And the storyline is that:

Many highly sought-after, ultra-rare artifacts have disappeared all over the world and no one, not even the savviest, most fashionable detectives and true crime bloggers have been able to figure out how these seemingly disconnected items are related! It's a real mystery how someone as sweet and adorable as Poppy Parker can be involved! We don't have a clue, do you?

On first glance she is fierce and impressive, looking more adult than usual. Hopefully the silver eyeshadow will not be too harsh. She’s quite reminiscent of what they used to call “ski bunny” but narrowly escapes the feel. If this was out a few years ago I might have gone for her, but with the raised prices, the onslaught of releases and the rising cost of living, it is a no from me. I do have a ski Poppy after all, so I’m not going to miss the gear. Also for a $175 doll, I’d like her to have a more styled hairdo. I like that the fur vest is separate from the jacket, which gives the outfit more versatility and redress value.
