Integrity Toys 2024 convention - Stilettos Out day 1: The convention collection and welcome doll

This year, Integrity Toys decided that it was about time they returned to an in-person convention, instead of the virtual online events they organized from 2020 onward, because of the pandemic. It sold out as is always the case with the IT events. They did a rehearsal last year with the Curated event (which was sold out as well but it left much to be desired in the organization department). So you can imagine that all club members, even the ones not attending, held their breath waiting for the event to start.

And then the unexpected happened: attendees received an email, about a week from the event, that the dolls for the convention had not arrived and would not be at the hotel, due to a combination of port workers three-day strike, the repeated hurricanes striking US east coast etc. Instead, attendees would have to make do with the prototype dolls on display, a QR code system to place their orders on-site. The dolls would ship to the attendees homes after the event and the company would supply gift cards as credit for the shipping costs. The furore of the club members was such (plus pointing out a clause in the terms and conditions of the convention ticket that specified free shipping in case the dolls were not delivered at the event), that IT had to change course and give real free shipping to all attendees. Of course those attending that come outside the US still have to pay taxes /custom duties when dolls are shipped to them instead of travelling back in their suitcase, and that is quite an extra cost to shoulder. The overall tone of the email did not help, as it was far from apologetic and more like “oops! we had an accident, no biggie”. The fact that the company waits until the very last week before an event to receive their merchandise for it shows poor planning. Even people like me, outside the US, knew about the hurricane season troubles, even the planned port workers strike. Also, since the pandemic, shipping keeps having serious problems with being on time (not that it did not have any before, but…), so it is always prudent to plan ahead of time. Anyway, let’s hope that all this will be seriously addressed at some point in the convention, directly from IT to their loyal, hard cash earned paying customers face to face.

In

So, on with the show - what is the Stilettos Out story all about? As per the club email:

Many highly sought-after, ultra-rare artefacts have disappeared all over the world and no one, not even the savviest, most fashionable detectives from the the SSB (Secret Style Bureau) and other covert agencies like FPI (Fashion Police International) have been able to figure out how these seemingly disconnected items are related! This year’s convention attendees were invited to participate in this intriguing mystery, tasked to help fictional true crime podcaster/blogger Donna Drake collect clues that will ultimately solve this decades-old cold case!

On the first day of the event, attendees arrived for registration (with early registration taking place on the previous day) and received their welcome bag, which included a mysterious dossier with some clues, and also learned they were getting a Welcome Gift Set, seeing the first part, the "Cryptic Cases" Imogen Lennox as Donna Drake doll, to be completed with more clothes and accessories during the event. The whole thing is part of the clue searching, as she’s the investigating agent all attendees must help uncover the mystery. Below, you can see the Welcome Gift Set doll as well as the Convention Collection dolls, available for attendees at the Souvenir Shop along with the NU. Face Seven Style Lab, which will be in the next article.

Imogen looks beautiful and must have been a welcome surprise to people registering for the convention, as there had been no mention of a welcome doll in the event communication. She does remind me of Be Daring Imogen 2016 club upgrade doll and also the Tropicalia 2012 convention had Imogen as a welcome gift set too! She looks quite basic now, let’s see what else she will acquire during the event to complete her set - and solve the mystery perhaps?

Vanessa looks like an Old Hollywood screen siren here, like Ava Gardner or Jane Russel. Bombshell material! Her screening looks a bit off to me, as if she’s trying to imitate someone else - let’s say Natalia for example. The hairstyle contributes to that feeling as well.Love her opera glasses! The shoes, corsage and stiletto (this style of a dagger makes it a stiletto) could have been part of the Magia 2000 Vanessa, no?

Alejandra is at her most daring here, with shaved brows and a very revealing sexy outfit. Unfortunately she looks like a Cold Carbon pale imitation (pun intended) and also channels a certain singer that I feel disgusted even thinking about, because of his abuse issues. Hard pass.

Poppy Parker plays Leia Organa in Star Wars: The Fashion Movie! Her braided hairstyle, apart from the famous film icon, reminds me of the Tokyo Twilight Poppy. She has the Spicy in Spain screening. Do you remember the Style Lab 2018 convention collection? It was named Miss behave and had a build-a-doll Poppy Parker doll as gift if you had all the collection bought (her pieces were hidden inside the other doll/outfit boxes). Her outfit is very 60s era space age looks, like the ones made by Courrèges and Cardin.

A new version of Tate Tanaka is always good news. When I first saw online photos of this guy from the convention (the prototype doll displayed there), I was instantly smitten. After a while though I noticed two things that made me go hmmm - his bland screening and his huge forehead. When you name a character Raven, you should go that little bit towards the goth connotations, no? Some eyeliner, a stronger brow. The suit is kind of tame, if you take out the boots and leather cummerbund, but I like its texture, like a deconstructed tweed.

A lovely version of Constance, that somehow does not pass muster for a spy, even though she is holding a retro-futuristic gun and a finger cigarette holder. She’s more like a film noir heroine, who just murdered her cheating husband and is waiting for the sleuth protagonist to show up. I love the light blue stones of her jewellery set.

Who is the mysterious character embodied by Elyse? Do not google it, you’re in for a great laugh (or not, depending on your situation). Don;t they google the perspective names of characters before they trademark them? LOL. Anyway, she’s a gorgeous doll, with an amazing gown and quite an original screening for Elyse. it shows what you can do if you step, even just a bit, out of the so-called box. Great work Alain (he designed Imogen too). Having said that, she has very minimal accessories - and why aren’t the shoes photographed with the rest of them? She needed at least a bracelet and a ring.

The Story:

Bathed in the luminescent glow of the underwater city, Violaine, the glamorous French mermaid with artfully tattooed scales and a flowing mane of pearlescent hair, captivated the ocean’s depths. Known for her enchanting voice that echoed through coral reefs, she held court among vibrant marine life. Violaine’s tales of hidden treasures and sunken ships spread far and wide, attracting admirers from distant oceans. One moonlit night, as she danced beneath the waves, a lone sailor, drawn by the melody of her song, discovered the mythical beauty, forever entwining their destinies in the depths of the sea. Designed by Jessy Ayala.

Sirène _Violaine_Perrin_doll

Let me start by stating that I am no big fan of mermaid dolls. The are fun to look at but to me they are too cutesy and veer too close to playline, no matter the usual design and colouring, which usually fits into stereotypes: blonde hair, blue eyes, rainbow/sea foam colours, lots of pearls, long wavy hair. Unfortunately this one checks all stereotypes.Bering Greek, and Generation X, I grew up with mermaids (Sirens) being ancient Greek mythical creatures that lured sailors to their death with their irresistible song. The only alternative to that was Alexander the Great’s sister, who roamed the seas, asking ships if her brother was alive. If sialors replied no, she sunk the ship, if yes, she was happy to let them go. So mermaids were demonic creatures that brought despair and destruction to ships, not the cute ladies we keep seeing nowadays. Disney definitely had a lot to do with this transformation, as even the original Little Mermaid tale by Hans-Christian Andersen is quite different from the cartoon/real life remakes that studio has done.

Sirène _Violaine_Perrin_doll

As you can tell from the previous paragraph, I was not awed by the last W Club doll of 2023. My collection veers towards fashion, even when the actual doll is based on real or fantastic persons/characters, and the only mermaid I have in it was a gift from the office secret Santa.

Violaine is a beautiful doll, no doubt about that, ans I am really happy for those of you who waited years for such a doll to appear in Nu Fantasy. I would have preferred a more fashion styled doll like the OOAK Siren Rayna that Jessy had done for the Fashion Fairytale convention in 2017. That one used the theme as a base to create an incredibly gorgeous doll with a more avantguard look and feel. Violaine has lovely make up but not something unusual, apart from not having applied eyelashes, as Jessy did not find the suitable shade of blue he wanted to match his concept - and I totally understand that. Her hair looks like iridescent noodles to me, I’d have liked something more like the OOAK Rayna mentioned before.

Sirène _Violaine_Perrin_doll accessories

Her non-mermaid fashions are based on a Versace Spring-Summer 2022 skirt (the sort ruffled one) and a David Koma Spring-Summer 2023 ensemble (starfish bra and short skirt with feather marabou train). The mermaid bra is inspired by old chandeliers, like the ones one could find in an old grand ship wreckage like the Titanic. She has the flat feet set to wear the iridescent mermaid tail and the high heeled one to wear either thigh high gold boots or pearl encrusted high heeled sandals. The mermaid ears with pearl clusters are probably the best thing about the accessories, as well as the conch shell clutch, which is functional. The stand base mimics a shell, making this look even more play-line, but has two alternatives, depending on whether you display the doll with or without the mermaid tail. Again, I am happy for all you people that wanted this doll so much, but for me it’s a hard pass.

Integrity Toys collaborates with Magia 2000 for their next capsule collection!

As I mentioned in my previous post, the W Club event presentation was double barrelled: after we saw the last doll of the Coven Couture collection, we were presented with the first one from the new collection of dolls - this one being the first of four dolls in the Integrity Toys X Magia 2000 Collaboration, designed by the talented duo behind Magia 2000, Mario Paglino and Gianni Grossi! I was lucky enough to meet the incredibly talented duo of Magia 2000 back in 2018, at the Italian Fashion Doll Convention, which they organise in Milan. They are amazing creators and awesome human beings and I am so happy that Integrity Toys is collaborating with them for an entire collection!

Carnival_Gala_In_Venice_Lukas_Maverick_doll

Celebrating 23 years in the doll world, Magia 2000, the artistic duo formed by fashion designer, Mario Paglino and graphic art director, Gianni Grossi, playfully began in 1999. After a few months, playing became collecting, which was soon followed by artistic passion. Their elegant, rich, fully detailed style, which takes a lot of inspiration from Italian couture, has been their distinguishing mark from the start.

Through the years, they attended almost 100 doll conventions around the world, traveling everywhere from Japan, the US, and all over Europe, promoting their brand and passion for doll customization, while generously donating several of their unique creations, which helped raise over $200,000.00 for various charities!

Magia 2000 was the first international design team to attend an Integrity Toys convention back in 2004 and won Judge’s and People’s choice awards at several design competitions afterward. In 2018, they were the first and only to host a Poppy Parker event outside of the US, welcoming designer David Buttry for the unveiling of the “Ciao!” Poppy Parker convention exclusive doll. Today, Mario and Gianni collaborate with various celebrities and brands and have been featured in multiple media outlets.

For our first offering in the series, as Gianni is a fan of IT's male fashion figures, we wanted to launch with something new and unexpected from Magia 2000 and we are thrilled to bring you our vision of what Lukas Maverick would wear if he attended the world-famous Venice Carnival!" -Magia 2000

The Story:

First in a series of dolls created especially for Integrity Toys, each figure and doll in this series will take fans on an ultra-creative tour of some of Italy's most iconic venues and festivals, as seen through the eyes of fabulous design duo Magia 2000!

This fantastic journey starts in the most unique place in the world: Venice! Entirely built over water, Venice becomes a symbol of eccentricity and glamour during its world-famous annual Carnival!

Lukas Maverick is putting his own modern, gender-fluid twist on carnival by wearing a flamboyant, elaborate costume inspired by the rare imported velvets and other exotic fabrics used over the centuries by Venetian costume designers to create the extravagant, lavish costumes worn by members of the Italian high society and aristocracy when attending the Carnival!

Mysterious and charming, foggy and sunny, the pure essence of Carnival and abundance. Lukas navigates the canals with his black mask on and only reveals himself in the middle of the party, flirting and seducing women and men alike with his fluid beauty and his charming dress, paying tribute to many iconic Italian fashion brands!

Such an incredible collaboration can only produce incredible dolls and Lukas does not disappoint! I love what Gianni and Mario have done with him, dressing him up in all that finery inspired by the venerable Venice Carnival! It also draws on current fashion trends - from Gucci to Arturo Obegero and others, channelling Harry Styles and Jared Leto but also all dandies who rocked similar looks in the past. Love the mask too and that it fastens on the doll, instead of being held with a handle in front of the face (it would never work on a doll). The second red headed Lukas (first one was Beauty, which has a similar vibe, albeit in a minimal, northern European style), he has a smouldering look with that eyeliner. Some club members said he reminded them of Red Johnny Mac from Jem.

Carnival_Gala_In_Venice_Lukas_Maverick_doll

Two complaints about the cape: 1. The fabric is like a terry cloth and ruins the luxury feel. Why not velvet There are thin velvets that can work in doll scale, we have seen them used by Integrity before. 2. The embroidery (inspired by the ceiling fresco decorations in the city’s mansions) should have continued along the bottom back of it. I know it was done for cost reasons but still. Love the black nails and also the awesome embroidered shoes. The details are so well taken care of - the ring is a lion because it is the symbol of Venice!

NU Fantasy Coven Couture collection closes the circle with Elements of Enchantment Korinne Dimas

This past Saturday, Integrity Toys did a live presentation for two dolls: the last doll in the Coven Couture series by Mark Tinkey as well as the first doll in the new Magia 2000 series for the line. Both dolls got collectors really excited, even though they will not be received until Spring 2023. Here we check out the Elements of Enchantment Korrine Dimas doll by Mark, who was present in the webinar, answering questions and showing us the prototype doll who looks amazing. The doll is a W Club lottery and, if any remain after that goes through, they will become available to the public - a thing I doubt as they are very popular dolls.

What a firring way to close the Coven Couture collection! Korinne looks amazing again, first time she is in a darker skin tone - she usually stays lighter. It suits the gorgeous dress to a T - I love the shape of it and the embroidery is fantastic. I’m all for green - if you want to sell me something, paint it green - and this olive shade is awesome. The only thing that worries me is the execution of the hip drape at the back - it does not look nice in the photos and it did not look nice on the presentation video. I hope this turns out better on the production dolls. She definitely channels Never Predictable Adaline King from the 2017 IFDC convention, designed by Vaughn Sawyers.

Elements_of_enchantment_Korinne_Dimas_doll
Elements_of_enchantment_Korinne_Dimas_doll

Her face looks amazing and the voluminous hair kept away from the face with the braids and gathering is well executed and avoids problems like Zuri had in the latest Meteor outing. I would have liked brown eyes instead of green though - would have given more of an Egyptian vibe. Mark said that Ancient Egypt was one of his sources of inspiration and I always like its elements if well Incorporated, like here. The curly hair, draping on the hips, gown shape, transparent fabric, plus those asymmetrical serpent earrings, are perfection. Well done Mark, not only for this amazing doll, but for the entire collection, which is one of the best ones Integrity Toys has done lately. I’m entering the lottery, are you?

First dolls of the new W Club year are here, Part I: NU Fantasy Coven Couture Scarlett Hex Anja Christensen

It did not take that long after the end of the registration period for new dolls to be unveiled from Integrity Toys. Carol and Alain had mentioned in the Club webinar that we would see new stuff soon and here they are. Plus a new Misaki is about to be available for pre-order in a matter of hours. Busy time! Carol presented the new dolls through live streaming, with the two designers, Mark Tinkey and Jessy Ayala as guests. Mark gave us his commentary about the third addition to the Coven Couture Nu Fantasy line and Jessy revealed two NU Face dolls, one of which is a totally new character. Let us check out the new witch first.

Anja, it’s been a while! This sculpt (which is one of the rejected Vero 2.0 faces) has been a while since last seen outside of convention - 2015 as an ITBE lingerie doll (which is one of the two I own, the other being Regal Solstice). She has appeared as a NU Fantasy doll before, back in 2013 IFDC as Glam Vamp, in similar hair and skin colouring. She is a more conventionally dressed lady than the previous two instalments of this collection, but I think she will look nice next to them. A hint of Gothic elements (black hair, light skin, red lips, nails, stones and dress) tries to distract from a very couture gown, with draping, netting and embroidery in full force. The dress is magnificent and Mark should be very proud. I hope the production doll does not deviate from this.

The bag is the now familiar metallic minaudière but encrusted with red stones, to compliment her jewellery. If you take out the thorn decorated bracelets and necklace, you have another version of Flame Rouge Veronique or Sizzling in Paris Poppy. Her make up should have been more blended to be more enticing to me. I would have preferred to see her styled more intensely though, like a glam version of Siouxsie Sioux for example. I would have entered the lottery in a heartbeat. Now, I must abstain, the dolly budget will not allow it. Even though she is a lottery for the club, any remaining dolls will become available to the public after the lottery ends. So if you are not a member and want her, stay alert.
