Poppy Parker 2018 City Sweetheart capsule collection reveal!

We knew that this year’s Poppy Parker collection theme would be something relevant to New York, as it was already announced back in the 2017 convention. And indeed, during the first Poppy reveal of the year, we discovered that the new collection is named City Sweetheart and it finds Poppy dressed in a variety of outfits for various occasions around the Big Apple. It is a small, capsule collection*, with four dolls available via dealers ( three in August and one in September) and a two-doll giftset available via right-to-buy lottery from IT Direct in late summer. I love two of the dealer dolls and the giftset, while the other two leave me cold. All doll’s have the high heeled foot, a first for a regular Poppy collection. There will not be a second wave of dolls in this collection as David mentioned, but the four IFDC Poppies, two W Club ones and the IT convention ones will be more than enough for the rest of the year.

* capsule collection is a condensed version of a designer’s vision, often limited edition, which transcends seasons and trends by being functional - read commercial. It’s made up of a few pieces which can be easily combined and interchanged.

Let’s see the collection dolls in detail, shall we?

This is the best doll of the collection and one of the best Poppy Parker doll’s ever released. Both doll and fashion are perfect and the accessories are fantastic! A book! That bag! The pendant! New cat eye sunglasses! Only minus: the dreaded, delicate, prone to break small hoop earrings. Her style is refined beatnick; the real thing would wear flat ballerina shoes.

Second favourite doll from this collection! I love everything about Co-Ed Cutie, from her skintone and make up to her outfit and amazing accessories! More books! A pencil! Cat eye glasses! A watch! Her blouse print resembles molecules, a nice nod to her studies, emphasised by her Physics book! I’m confirmed for both this and Off Beat, which is great! During the Q&A session in the W Club forum that followed the presentation email, David Buttry said her skintone does not match Sweet Confection body, just in case anyone was thinking about using the body for a replacement.

Not liking this one very much. It’s probably the styling and colours that don’t make her pop out to me. She has the new sculpted gloves hands that finally put an end to the oven mittens we amassed over the years.

IMG_5811.PNG

Peach is my all time least favourite colour, so I definitely don’t like this one. She’s very washed out with her pale skin and colouring, so not even the doll attracts me like other pale Poppies before her, who at least had a smokey or better defined eye to make them appealing. I like the shawl like detail around her shoulders. And it seems over mittens stick around for longer gloves, instead of the new type we saw in the Vanessa FR giftset with the sculpted hand and fabric arm. Why should this ugly thing continue? The plain accessories make this one even more boring.

What a lovely giftset! I’m a sucker for anything green, so the colour was the first thing that struck me, with its great combinations and bright hue. Darla looks gorgeous here, in her capri pants, bright accessories and flamboyant hairdo. Poppy compliments her nicely, if more demurely so, with her lovely striped dress, brooch and sublime straw clutch. I will enter the lottery for these two ladies in late summer.

Integrity Toys May 2015 release part 3: Poppy Parker "The Model Scene" collection

Poppy Parker probably is the big seller of all Integrity Toys lines, surpassing even Fashion Royalty in covetability and secondary market prices. This was again proven with the release of this year's line, named "The Model Scene": at least one of the dolls was sold out on pre-orders within the first night after the webinar and probably more of the collection followed into the following day. Only hope for those not having early access to release information would be dealers that do not take pre-orders but put their dolls on their websites as soon as the confidentiality period is over and sell on a first-come, first-served basis. David Buttry was inspired this year from the model scene of the mid-to-late 60s and so had the opportunity to give the dolls a wide variety of looks. On the other hand, the dominant character was Poppy Parker (she is the high seller after all) with only one Darla and one new male character to complete the collection. One of the Poppy dolls will be available from IT Direct - so no dealer has that one for pre-order.

This one has a beautiful face and hair do but the outfit is not my cup of tea. It looks like something Peggy Olsen would be wearing on a bad day at work. She wears a black and multi colour dot two-piece suit with white collar and cuff detail, topped off by a black flocked hat with a white grosgrain ribbon band, earrings with matching ring, white fishnet pantyhose and white shoes.Poppy comes with a blue portfolio, for her  portraits. Poppy Parker is a 12-inch fully articulated vinyl fashion doll with rooted hair and hand applied eyelashes. A doll stand is included. This is one of my favourites and I am getting her.Poppy models a long blue floral chiffon maxi dress with a blue ribbon choker, blue faux leather shoes, small silver hoop earrings and silver bangle bracelets. I would have preferred one of the more extreme geometric patterns that were usual on this type of flowing dress but the bold colours more than make up for the (dreaded) floral. Love the face paint, the hair do and  the chocker. A nice draw-string satchel would have been the perfect compliment for this outfit. Poppy Parker is a 12-inch fully articulated vinyl fashion doll with rooted hair and hand applied eyelashes. A doll stand is included. For adult collectors ages 15 and up.

This one is completely out there. While I like the overall design of the outfit, her face and hair do (beehive Jeannie ponytail as David described it) are not what I'd do with this - maybe I'd have opted for one of those huge complicated multi-layered up-dos with braids, fat curls and fake ponytails incorporated. And definitely have her with dark hair. I must applaud the daring look though, it captures the era perfectly. Poppy wears a lime green jumpsuit with silver sequin net overlay and a lime green chiffon watteau train. Long multi colour ball and chain earrings, silver cuff, large blue ring and silver faux leather strappy high heel sandals complete this look. Poppy Parker is a 12-inch fully articulated vinyl fashion doll with rooted hair and hand applied eyelashes.A doll stand is included. For adult collectors ages 15 and up.

This one is a mini gift set, a doll with two outfits, that will be sold through IT Direct and will not be available from dealers to pre-order. The extra outfit only raises the price about $10 so that is good. I love the dress but the other ensemble could do without the pink vest - really guys? Pink vest and yellow hat on a red head? Love the print belt. Poppy wears a black and white polka dotted mock tied blouse, large yellow straw hat, hot pink faux fur vest, white cropped bell bottom with mod floral faux leather belt and faux leather black ankle boots. The second outfit is a black and charcoal floral sequin mini dress with black peter pan collar, a long silk ribbon bow and tails. Black pantyhose included. Poppy Parker is a 12-inch fully articulated vinyl fashion doll with rooted hair and hand applied eyelashes. A doll stand is included as well. Poor Darla, she got the short stick. It was really a chance to make her look more exotic and eccentric, like one of the few models of colour that were successful in the 60s, Donyale Luna...

...and instead she comes dressed like a secretary in Mad Men. Which is not bad per se, on the contrary, the look is great - but for another collection. Maybe do Mad Men? Dawn? The afro was a step in the right direction but the rest is too plain for this line. At least she gets a bag, the other dolls do not have one (except the portfolio of the Go See one). She wears a red velvet mini dress vest, white chiffon blouse with multi colour block print, large silver hoop earrings, black daisy brooch, shiny black faux leather purse and matching boots. Darla Daley is a 12-inch fully articulated vinyl fashion doll with rooted hair and hand applied eyelashes. A doll stand is included. For adult collectors ages 15 and up.

Skin Tone: FR White
Hair Color: Blond Mix
Eyelashes: No

The possibility that a new male character would be included in this collection was discussed since last year's convention, when the line inspiration was announced. I was certainly expecting someone more along the lines of David Hemmings, the protagonist in Antonioni's Blow Up (a seminal film of the 60s inspired by David Bailey, the famous fashion photohrapher)...

...and not someone that looks so Eurotrash of the era, one of the fake German-sounding counts/princes/barons that roamed the continental night clubs looking for their next lover. Even though he's a new sculpt, he could very well fit with the Color Infusion guys or even the Jem line. Nigel North is wearing his hot pink shirt, red and purple paisley brocade jacket, purple velvet pants, silver sunglasses, silver and purple ring. He also sports a nice miniature camera. Nigel North is a 12.5-inch fully articulated vinyl fashion figure with rooted hair. A doll stand is included. For adult collectors ages 15 and up.

There is always that one doll in every collection that will be the talk of the town; become the most coveted one and disappear off the shelves in a matter of minutes. In this collection, Midas TOuch proves her name right - she was sold out in almost every dealer the night after the presentation (except the ones that put up their dolls for sale today). I tried but could not get one - she has a smaller edition size, which of course did not help. The dress looks like a golden remake of the Happening Poppy silver one and, frankly, India Poppy is much more nuanced and beautiful. But you know how things are. First AA Poppy was bound to be a success, which makes me wonder about the edition size logic. I'd get it (but not condone it) for Darla or another character, but not here. She wears a gold sequin mini dress with metallic gold organza collar, lace up gladiator sandals (which I adore), large gold disc earrings, gold cuffs with gold bangle bracelets. She also has a gold tone microphone and stand that looks fantastic. Poppy Parker is a 12-inch fully articulated vinyl fashion doll with rooted hair and hand applied eyelashes. A doll stand is included as well. For adult collectors ages 15 and up.

With a much better looking similarly styled wedding dress as part of the Funny Face collection, I wonder why this one follows in the same form and general idea. There were so many different styles of wedding outfits in that era that we could have had something truly unique here. The doll has the Hungarian skin-tone, which is like a tan, lighter than Latina. Wild Thing Poppy had this skin tone as well and The Camera Loves Her Poppy in this collection does too. Poppy wears a white satin wedding dress with white dotted tulle overlay and a tulle wedding veil with large bow detail. Her wedding bouquet, pearl earrings with matching necklace and a wedding ring complete the look. Poppy Parker is a 12-inch fully articulated vinyl fashion doll with rooted hair and hand applied eyelashes. A doll stand is included as well. For adult collectors ages 15 and up.

Best one of the bunch - the Barbarella clone! This is the Poesie Sans Couleur version of Miss Parker. Smoky eyes and pale lips combined with Japan skin tone and pale blond hair - a winner. Plus she wears a military style spacey outfit. Love love love her. Too bad she does not have a bag. She has the largest edition size of all the dolls in the line, they probably expected this one to be the most popular. Poppy wears a silver faux leather mini dress with silver and white lurex bodice and sleeves. This look is completed by large silver triangle earrings, silver tone mod sunglasses and over-the-knee silver faux leather boots. Poppy Parker is a 12-inch fully articulated vinyl fashion doll with rooted hair and hand applied eyelashes. A doll stand is included as well. For adult collectors ages 15 and up.

Bus Stop Darla Daley - swinging sixties!

As mentioned before in this blog, the 2012 Poppy Parker collection was mod themed. Darla Daley was no exception. One of the two Darlas released was added to my collection - she has already made a guest appearance in a previous post. Here she is in all her glory.

She is wearing a striped chemisier mini dress with white piping, taken directly from one Twiggy wore in the '60s:

As you can see in the sketch above, it is a down-pat reproduction even to the shoes and accessories. The gloves are substituted by a pair of painted hands which work nicely.

The outfit is completed with a gorgeous orange bag - one of the best in this line.

The white "eyelet" tights and "spectator" strappy shoes are pure perfection.

She has very neutral colouring which suits her skin tone well, adding to the doll's versatility.

Her hair is pulled back in a ponytail which curls at the end. Cute spit curls are framing her face, a very nice touch that compliments her immensely! White hoop earrings finish the look.

In my opinion she is the best Darla released up until now and should be in everyone's collection.

Below she is wearing Poppy's She's Not There Avengers dress while Poppy gets to wear hers - a match made in heaven:

The Twiggy clone: She's Not There Poppy Parker

When, back in spring 2012, Integrity Toys announced their line up for the year, one of the most talked about dolls was She's Not There Poppy Parker. The dominant theme of the Poppy collection was swinging 60's and London back in the days of Mary Quant and Vidal Sassoon but this one stood out as she channelled uncannily the model that defined the image of an era: Twiggy. Her short, boyishly cropped hair, her mod outfit and accessories, her bold make up, all reminded us of her. Anticipation ran high, until collectors started receiving the doll. Many complaints were written on boards and blogs about how different she was from the prototype, how washed out she looked and many people felt disappointed. I was one of the people who got the doll so let's see how she measures up to expectations.

First impressions: she is a very beautiful doll. Even inside the box she looks lovely and cute and does remind me of Twiggy a lot. People complaining she looks nothing like the promotional photos should remember that photos can be retouched/overexposed etc.  to make them look a certain way. Even Twiggy did not look like her photos did. The trick would be to see how she looked in photos taken of her and how close she would come to the prototype (which for me was not that different to begin with).

A major problem was immediately apparent: the hood of her coat could not be fastened under her chin. Not only was the strap a bit smaller than it should have been, the hood itself could have been cut a tiny bit bigger. And the design of the hood is completely different than the one shown in the promo photos. This was indeed disappointing.

On a previous post I had written about the inspiration for this outfit and how it came from an identical (minus hood and boots) one that Diana Rigg as Emma Peel was wearing in the Avengers series. The same dress and coat were also photographed for British Vogue on Jean Shrimpton (who is another Poppy Parker look alike) and was designed by Jean Varon for the Avengers Collection.  I love the outfit. If you can forget the hood mishap, it is pure mod sixties in it's best. It consists of the white coat over the black dress with contrasting stripes, red fishnet stockings (which stain terribly, remove them immediately from your doll), boots, handbag, ball striped earrings (Twiggy was wearing many pairs in this style in editorials) and red Jackie O sunglasses like the white ones that Sweet Confection Poppy is wearing.

The bag is one of the prettiest I have seen on this line so far. And she comes with a second set of white painted glove hands to maximize the mod effect. The boots are nice but I would have preferred them without the open toe. The original outfit had shoes that looked more like a negative version of the ones Bus Stop Darla is wearing.

Her make up is, to my eyes. just like the promos - neither washed out nor pronounced. I forgot to set her eyelashes properly for most of the photo-shoot but she still looks great. Her hair is nicely cropped and I have seen many people who washed and re-set them with even better results but I still have not tried this.

When I got Bus Stop Darla, I had to re-dress Poppy with that outfit: it is one that the real Twiggy was wearing in many photos and is very iconic. The results are breathtaking.

She looks even better with this outfit than with the mod one (which looks great on Darla, but that's another photo shoot). It inspired me to have a series of photos tampered with to make them look vintage, like they were lifted off magazines of the 60's. I hope you like them.

The set was made by using Karim Rashid's chess - the colours and design matched mod-Poppy very well!

Integrity Toys 2012 release: Poppy Parker

For the main part of 2012 Poppy Parker collection (remember that Poppy also made her appearance at IDEX this year alongside Chip and Darla and Sabrina?) the company chose to continue with her trip to England - where she went with Darla to work and is chaperoned by Chip and his family. SO the mood is Mod - 60's swinging London, inspirations from Mary Quant, mods, Vidal Sassoon etc. All dolls have applied eyelashes this time (instead of painted ones) at the upper lid.

Item #PP036 Sunshine Games Poppy Parker™ Dressed Doll Suggested Retail Price: $79.00 US Limited Edition Size: 500 Dolls Worldwide Estimated Delivery date: Mid July 2012

The latina skin-tone is what makes this one pop out, along with her lovely make up colours. The outfit is a striped bathing suit in hot pink and lime green. A pink and white hat, white sandals, white hoop earrings, matching sunglasses and a pink and white tote bag finish off her accessories. Lovely brunette hair in pigtails! I like her a lot but I had to pick only two Poppys (having already one coming from the Chip/Poppy gift-set from IDEX). So not now.

Item #PP037 She's Not There Poppy Parker™ Dressed Doll Suggested Retail Price: $99.00 US Limited Edition Size: 600 Dolls Worldwide Estimated Delivery date: Mid June 2012

If this is not Twiggy I will eat my hat! Those eyes! That hair! The outfit! The earrings! The boots! Poppy is wearing a black and white mini dress, red fishnet stockings, and a white and black coat with matching hood. She comes with a pair of regular hands and another pair of painted glove hands. She has a white bag trimmed in black and matching peep-toe boots. Her amazing earrings are striped white baubles hanging from her ears. Red huge sunglasses (like W Club Poppy's from last year) complete the look. This is my favourite from the whole collection!

Item #PP038 Day Tripper Poppy Parker™ Dressed Doll Suggested Retail Price: $99.00 US Limited Edition Size: 500 Dolls Worldwide Estimated Delivery date: Mid July 2012

Freckles! First time ever on a Poppy! Her fashion consists of a blue mini dress with canary yellow accents and fake pockets, a yellow coat and hat, and matching yellow go-go boots. A blue train case and blue stud earrings complete her look. Too much yellow for my taste.

Item #PP039 The Happening Poppy Parker™ Dressed Doll Suggested Retail Price: $89.00 US Limited Edition Size: 600 Dolls Worldwide Estimated Delivery date: Mid July 2012

When I saw this one I though: "Meghan Draper"! She reminds me so much of Jessica Pare in Mad Men! She wears a splashy silver sequin mini dress, metallic fishnets and silver sling-back bow shoes. Her hair is pulled up in a very  long raven ponytail. Incredibly beautiful drop earrings and a silver clutch complete the look. Yes, she has purple eyes. I can just imagine her doing the Zoo Bisou Bisou number! She's my second pick from this collection.

Item #PP040 Colour My World Darla Daley™ Dressed Doll Suggested Retail Price: $99.00 US Limited Edition Size: 400 Dolls Worldwide Estimated Delivery date: Mid June 2012

Of course her best friend would not be missing! Darla is wearing a copy of the famous Mondrian dress of YSL (so much for the street inspiration the IT designers said they had) but it is a pale imitation - the colours are not as vibrant and it looks flat on the doll (maybe the photos are over exposed). Her shoes are black and white heels, she has a matching bag and a blue hat. And to think she looks her best yet in this incarnation. Poor girl. If the dress was better, this would have been my first Darla. Maybe when I see real life pics... who knows?

Item #PP041 Bus Stop Darla Daley™ Dressed Doll Suggested Retail Price: $89.00 US Limited Edition Size: 400 Dolls Worldwide Estimated Delivery date: Mid July 2012

The second Darla doll is wearing something that Twiggy was sporting in a photo session back in the 60s: a striped jersey dress with white details, paired with a white straw hat with a black band, black and white shoes, and white fishnets. Orange handbag to die for. Her hair is red and she has a spit curl which is a great addition to her looks. She comes with a set of regular hands and one set of painted glove hands.

Is this the inspiration?

Item #PP042 My Generation Chip Farnsworth III™ Dressed Doll Suggested Retail Price: $99.00 US Limited Edition Size: 450 Dolls Worldwide Estimated Delivery date: Mid July 2012

This version of Chip, although gorgeously outfitted, does nothing for me. Chip Farnsworth III is not a mod guy, he's an american heir, his get up should be a bit more conservative. So no-no this time. Chip wears black and white houndstooth trousers, black turtleneck, black pea-coat, a matching black cap and black Chelsea boots. He looks just like that Pan Am captain, Dean Lowery, played by Mike Vogel.
