Integrity Toys Legendary 2020 Convention day 1: Welcome doll and W Club Upgrade dolls

It’s that time of the year again - Integrity Toys convention has begun! And this year it is the 25th anniversary of the company, so the convention is special. Also it is the first ever virtual one because of the pandemic. This of course has given the chance to more people to participate in it, even if they do not have the actual main convention ticket. Anyone who has the W Club event or the Upgrade package can attend all events (save the afterparty on the last day) . I’m happy to say that I am one of the people attending, even though I do not have the main convention ticket, so this year I have an inside view of everything unfolding, to the extend that time difference allows.

Integrity_Toys_2020_Legendary_convention_main_header.png

The platform of the online event opened for everyone at 10.00 EST - which was 17.00 for me, so quite convenient. The interface was similar to most platforms for online exhibitions and events currently available on the market (I know because it’s the sector I work in) so it felt familiar and easy to navigate right off the bat. I hope it is like this for everyone! The first event we could all attend was a welcome chat with the Percy family, which was an easy way of saying hello to everyone and ask lots of questions about everything convention related. After about an hour (and overcoming some technical glitches that caused a small delay), we were able to watch the first presentation in the convention auditorium: Alain and Carol welcomed us via video (pre-filmed): they talked about the event and the various technical stuff and how people could make their shopping afterwards. Then we were able to see the upgrade dolls unveiled, so let’s start with the amazing duo of Veronique Perrin and Adele Makeda, who were the original Fashion Royalty debut dolls back in the day,

I’m so happy I preordered the upgrade dolls as they are AMAZING! Look at her face! Her hairstyle! Her dress! The face reminds me a lot of Glamazon. Love her. Love the polka dot detail. And did you notice that she has a bag? Yeap, in this convention, dolls come with bags. Read about the dress inspiration here.

Veronique is gorgeous as well - her platinum hair, blue eyes and perfect make up match her black outfit to a T. She’s the ideal counterpart to Adele, yin and yang. They make an awesome set of dolls. Alain said they have quite a long waiting list for them and that was just from the sketches.

After the presentation of the two upgrade dolls, we saw another pre-recorded segment of Alain interviewing Percy Newsome, the Integrity Toys founder and CEO. He talked about the creation of the company and how it operates, while sharing funny memories with Alain. Then it was time to present,,, a gift, so they showed us a doll-sized IT T-shirt, like the ones you could buy for yourself from their shop. But then, they said that we need a doll to wear it and out came the welcome doll, which is Janay!

David Buttry was inspired by Carrie Bradshaw for the outfit (Carry On, right?) and of course Janay is the doll that started it all for Integrity Toys. It is fitting that she gets to be the welcome doll on the 25th anniversary of the company. She was not in any of the emails sent so far by the company, so here are more photos from their Instagram account.

Integrity Toys Dolly Days finale pt.2: Fashion Royalty Retrofuture 2019 Collection reveal

The second collection unveiled on Saturday was a three doll Fashion Royalty Collection designed again by Jessy Ayala. The collection is inspired by various things: Thierry Mugler’s robotic body armour outfits, Daphne Guinness, Dior, the artist Fecal Matter, Balenciaga, Tom Ford and Alexander McQueen. Lots of influences, combined in various ways, with an almost impeccable result. They fit great with the Anika Luxottica Dasha from the IFDC 2016 convention. If the dolls were more, I’d have a serious budget problem. And contrary to the NuFace collection before it, this one is justifying the prices attached to the dolls. Two of them are available through IT dealers (Vanessa and Adéle), one is the event doll, available only to W Club members for preorder (Dania). I love this collection so much, I got them all!

What an amazing Vanessa is this? The doll, using the 1.0 sculpt, immediately reminded me of AFL Vanessa. The Hungarian skintone is a first for this sculpt I think. It goes well with her make up as well as the colour of her outfit. And what an outfit! The dress is the one made and worn by the artist Fecal Matter, who in turn was inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friends dress. Only now it is red and has grommets as decoration, which I remember seeing on old and newer Versace outfits. Remember that the bow is detachable. And with Marilyn and retrofuturism combined, you can’t not mention the work of Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama, with his sexy robotic pin ups. The thunderbolt pumps are very Thierry Mugler, as are the metallic hands and arm bands. The sunglasses remind me of vintage Alain Mikli styles. Good thing that she has three pairs of hands: regular, holding and robotic. I added a slideshow below, to help you see the various influences.

A gorgeous Adéle is the second doll in this collection and is one of the best Adéle dolls ever released. Nubian skintone? Check. Beautiful make up? Check. Great hairstyle? Check. Amazing outfit? Check. Brilliant accessories? Check. She could be a Christian Dior modelfrom the John Galliano era, with that modernised Bar Suit silhouette. And, not that Jessy could have had an advanced look at the new Ivy Park collection that Beyoncé is dropping next January, but the jacket could easily have been part of it, from what I have seen in the photos of her in the January 2020 Elle magazine. The bag is the metallic version of the Dior Saddle bag that designer Kim Jones debuted on the Pre-Fall 2019 Men collection, in collaboration with - guess who? - Hajime Sorayama! Pity this bag is not metallic; its real life counterpart was and cost a breathtaking $35,000! There are only ten of them in the world, one being owned by KKW. Jones has been obsessed with Sorayama’s work for years and he had him do a special installation of his robotic woman statue for the show. The metallic hands are again Mugler. I made a slideshow with all the references, check it out below.

The pièce de résistance of this collection (and the whole week in general) is Mothership Dania Zarr. She is incredible. Inspired by the Alexander McQueen friend and muse, Daphne Guinness, the Mugler robotic bodysuits and a Balenciaga coat, the doll stands out from the rest. I love the Daphne Guiness inspiration, she is one of my favourite fashion people and I love the idea of having a doll inspired by her. She has been photographed wearing lots of incredible McQueen originals by the greatest photographers. Her trademark streaked hair are like the ones Dania is sporting. The outfit is based on the Mugler robotic outfits, taking elements from all of them - he has done quite a few, with the most famous being the one worn by model Emma Sjöberg both on Mugler’s catwalk and in the George Michael videoclip Too Funky (watch it below). And the bodice and arm covers are made of metal. The coat is inspired by Balenciaga (Jessy mentioned it in a video accompanying the email presentation). Cristobal Balenciaga had designed a short coat in this style, which Nicholas Ghesquière redid for the storied house into a dress, many years later. The belt is from the Christian Dior Resort 2019 Collection by Maria Grazia Chiuri. The boots are surprisingly not Mugler but Tom Ford Spring 2013. And the sunglasses are from Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton Fall 2012 RTW collection, bringing it full circle back to Daphne Guinness. A tour de force. If you’re not a W Club member, you will have to wait till next year to get it on the secondary market. The price is higher than the other two dolls but she fully justifies it. There’s the slideshow with the references below.

Integrity Toys 2019 Convention: Live From Fashion Week - Day 1

The 2019 Integrity Toys Live From Fashion Week convention opened officially this week in Baltimore and once again, this blog will be bringing you all the new dolls and outfits, as products become available at the convention throughout the weekend. This year's theme is all about fashion, and with the exception of the Poppy Parker Style Lab (which celebrates the 10th anniversary of Poppy Parker), every exclusive doll offered at the event, whether in the convention collection, salesroom, centerpieces or giveaways, is inspired by either Spring, Resort, Summer, Fall or Winter fashion weeks as follows:

Poppy Parker is Fashion Week Spring/Summer 1967

Fashion Royalty is Fashion Spring/Summer 2020

Monarchs is Fashion Week Resort 2020

East 59th is Fashion Week Fall/Winter 1956

The Industry is Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2020

NU. Face is Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2020

Dolls from the Fashion Royalty® Collection and the NU. Face™ Collection were designed by Jessy Ayala, the East 59th® Collection by Chris Stoeckel, The Monarchs Homme by Vaughn Sawyers and the Poppy Parker™ Collection by David Buttry.

The convention registration started on Wednesday for the attendees who arrived early and they all received "Fresh Perspective" Baroness Agnes Von Weiss in their welcome bag. The bag had Powder Puff Poppy Parker printed on it, celebrating Poppy’s 10th anniversary.

Note: All dolls pictured in these photos are prototypes; final colors and textures may vary slightly.

I’m not crazy about this version of the Baroness. She’s beautiful but I find her make up too pronounced and candy coloured to like (it looks more prominent in real life photos). Her outfit and accessories remind me of Going Public Eugenia. And, as you will see below, most of the dolls in this convention so far, remind me of older releases. I don’t know if it is due to the production problems that troubled Integrity Toys this year or simple lack of inspiration, but I’m a bit underwhelmed by what I’m seeing in the first convention day, with a couple of notable exceptions.

She look a lot like her sister from the Faces of Adéle giftset. From the waist up she gives me Adut Akech vibes in Valentino. The pants are not to my liking, they needed a more fluid fabric to work properly. Love the bag and hat, her accessories in general are superb.

I’m not against romantically styled dolls, but they have to be styled in a certain way. This is not it. Very renaissance looking, a little modern Juliet, looking for her Romeo. The extra flat feet and sandals only accentuate the effect.

The last doll of the convention collection is a new Aurelia. Blue seems to be a favourite colour for her. She looks regal and I love her jewellery. Not enough to want her for my collection though. The hairstyle is a bit off for her era though, it was popular in the next decade. Not many accessories but killer gloves.

One of the oldest and most loved characters makes his appearance again! Darius has a new sculpt, not a gorgeous as the previous one though. He look more like Tyson Beckford now. The hot pink suit is lovely. He has nice accessories too, plus a hat and an earring. And yes, the ugly sneaker trend has hit the Monarchs too. Must add that titling your male doll The Art Of Manliness in 2019 and the era of #MeToo and LGTB+ rights is a bit weird.

The Faces Of Adèle - the 4th W Club doll is one of the best ever!

The character of Adèle Makéda was one of the first two Fashion Royalty dolls and has been a mainstay of the lineup ever since. She has gone through three sculpt revisions and has been coveted in most of her incarnations, resulting in holy grail status dolls like The Muse. Uncharacteristically for a company that prides itself on diversity, Integrity Toys has never before made Adèle a W Club doll (or even an event doll), a fact that has repeatedly been intensely discussed on various forums. So it was an incredibly satisfying surprise to see her as the fourth W Club doll this year, in the final Dolly Days email. "The Faces of Adèle" gift set, designed by Jessy Ayala, gives Club members a unique opportunity to have all three versions of her in one go. Instead of using the typical head-switch feature so that we can interchange sculpts on one body, Integrity Toys includes two interchangeable busts in two different sizes (1 extra FR bust and 1 extra NU. Face bust) that also feature delicately blushed nipples for the first time, easily allowing us to switch either one of Adèle's sculpts on her lower body. Not only that, the company also offers a package of two extra lower bodies in a special price, for those of us who want to have three complete dolls (I guess all of us?). W Club members have until the 13th of December to preorder the set.

Adèle Makéda is a 12.5-inch fully articulated fashion doll that comes with three different sculpts that encompass the various incarnations of the character through the years. Each head features hand-applied eyelashes and has either fully rooted or velvety soft flocked hair (on Adèle version 1.0) depending on the case. As the bodies feature removable parts, you can swap out Adèle's look by removing her bust (instead of having to remove the head, solely).A gorgeous electric pink gown, an intricately designed daytime dress that features modern graphic embroideries and a lingerie set that includes two different bras to better display the busts on the newly developed "Museum Podium" stand are also included with this set. This set also includes her accessories - long boots, two pairs of shoes and two complete jewelry sets. For adult collectors ages 15 and up only. A W Club members-only exclusive.

As mentioned in the description above, this set includes a newly developed doll stand that allows you to display not only the complete doll on her telescoping "saddle stand", but also display the other included portraits "museum style", on stylish acrylic podiums. The busts insert perfectly on a peg at the top of each podium, creating a showcase for any of your favorite characters. Here's a 3D Rendering of the stand:

Another amazing W Club doll from Integrity Toys. I love all her incarnations as they are in this set, from the sublime 1.0 with the flocked hair and high fashion style, somewhere between a young Grace Jones and Lupita Nyongo, to the always sassy and sexy 2.0, the child of Naomi Campbell and Beyoncé, to the 3.0 with her more mature and defined look, reminiscent of Kerry Washington or Diahann Caroll. 2017 is turning out to be the year of Adéle Makeda.

The sculpts are not the only thing making this gift set incredible. The three outfits are gorgeously rendered too. The fuchsia asymmetrical gown, with the draping and the open back and matching shoes is divine. The white dress with the minimalistic linear embroidery and asymmetrical hemline looks gorgeous. The lingerie is always a bit boring to me if they do not have an intricate corset to go, but that’s just me.

The painted nipples are a nice touch for those who want to display her naked or make some great photos, but other than that, serve no purpose. If you go down the more realistic path, you start asking why not proper genitals? And that’s opening a can of worms.

So so what is the inspiration behind the outfits? Both dresses seem to come from the work of a very talented Australian fashion designer, Toni Maticevski. Not so sure about the gown, but the dress is spot on.

And, as mentioned before, there’s the chance to get a pack of two lower bodies to match those two busts, cause surely everyone wants to have three complete dolls from this set. The package is $35 for the two lower bodies together, again to preorder by December 13th.
