Stay Tuned Day 2: Poppy Parker as an alien!

The second day of the online Integrity Toys 2022 event in lieu of a convention, "Stay Tuned", gave us only one doll: Poppy Parker playing an alien commander, as designed by David Buttry. "Galaxy Girl", is supposedly a sci-fi drama featuring Poppy Parker playing Commander Yeto, “an ultra-smart pink-skinned alien girl who possesses a superior intellect and the power to communicate in any outer-worldly language she desires!”, clearly inspired by Star Trek. The doll is available through lottery for the W Club members - the edition is large, 3,000, so I am sure that most who want her, will get her. Of course there was a video and the corresponding TV title card for the imaginary show.

After the grey skinned Poppy we got as an appetizer for the online event, back in August, now we have a pink skinned doll - with blue hair - offered. She looks cute but a. she reminds me too much of Out Of This World Poppy and b. Cute is not enough to qualify a doll for purchase in this household anymore - not with the prices we currently face (plus the expensive shipping and customs charges) and the general rise of expenses we face in everyday life everywhere. So cute little Miss Galaxy Girl will remain on her far away galaxy. I am curious to see how this hairstyle will survive packaging and shipping. I love that even as an alien, Poppy is so fashion obsessed that she has two different pair of boots to groove in!

I had to take some time off due to me finally catching covid - now I’m doing fine and we have some lovely things to see, so let’s get on with it! A "nighttime pool party" was all the invitation said! Poppy wondered if that meant she should be dressed for the pool, for a party, or for a more formal affair. Ever the ingenious gal, she decided to be ready for any of the three scenarios and still confidently mix 'n mingle as the hit of the party!

I am totally not feeling this. either as a Poppy Parker or a Palm Springs fashion set. All the pieces give off a Barbie 80s vibe instead of late 60s - early 70s desert chic. The flouncy mini skirt in particular looks like she has a scrunchie around her hips. Missed opportunity to give us that white lace top and pants combo we see in most of Aaron Slim’s photos of the pool crowd in Palm Springs. I am worried that if this will not sell (thankfully it is made to order), we will not see another stand alone fashion set for ages. But seriously, I do not want fashion sets to be like this. I expect more stylish and nuanced fashion, not Barbie leftovers.

It has been a while since we got furniture, but not as long as Alain tried to make it sound like in the presentation - it was almost as if we never got another chair since the Barcelona imitations back in 2004! The plastic imitating wood reminds me a lot of Playmobil sets. I love the design and the complete package looks great alongside Poppy (and not only the Palm Spring ones) - even the lamp lights up. So I did pre-order one set - it will go nicely along both the Panton chairs from Dynamite Girls that are actually contemporary to Poppy (it first came out in 1959) and the Arnio Ball Chair (1965) we got with the Swinging London collection. More please.

This is the pièce de résistance of the entire Palm Springs collection. Two gorgeous Poppy dolls, in Nubian skin tone for the first time, dressed in magnificent colourful clothes, with beautiful and stylish accessories, that are sure to be the grail of many a Poppy doll collector in the years to come. Too bad this is a lottery, instead of a made to order release, like the rest of the IT exclusive stuff. I’d rather have this than any Alice in Wonderland club doll Poppies anytime. The main inspiration for David was the 4 covers of British Vogue back in April 2021, with their bold colours and hairstyles on African-American models (he even mimicked the two different coloured earrings styling, while giving us two sets of earrings as accessories). And he managed to make it look era appropriate too, unlike the fashion set. There will be a body completer set available to purchase optionally, for those that want to have two separate dolls (who doesn’t?). I love how the two versions have differently coloured faces, one with bolder colours, the other more neutral. And the afro looks amazing on her. The huge braid looks plain in comparison and could have been, to make this even more perfect, a slightly more elaborate era-appropriate hairstyle. Will definitely enter the lottery for this, although I’d rather this was made to order.

Poppy Parker Palm Springs Collection part 1: the dealer dolls

After getting the first doll of the Palm Springs Poppy Parker Collection way back in February 2021 (as a W Club Upgrade), and two more dolls as W Club exclusives for 2021), collectors finally witnessed the reveal of a full blown line up. The long overdue reveal was eagerly awaited by W Club members and thankfully it did not disappoint. With all the pandemic problems wrecking havoc on production and delivery all over the globe, this feels like a return back to normal - even though there is no normal to go back to anymore. What we are not going back to are the prices. They were already way up there, and with most of the dolls of this release going through dealers, it was only bound to go higher still. With Poppy being Integrity Toys money maker though, the raised prices did not seem to deter collectors, who snapped up the dolls ion no time. We got four dolls through dealers, we will get a gift set with 1 and a half doll (lol, check the next post for it) plus a fashion set and a furniture set through IT Direct and the W Club. Below you will find the items from the collection available via IT dealers. All dolls will be pre-orders, slated for shipping sometime in Spring 2023.

Poppy Parker’s day in the sun was complete. She had spent the afternoon by the pool catching up with Sergio and it had given her the perfect golden glow for her upcoming fashion shoot!

First up a gorgeous sun-kissed blonde Poppy that is the embodiment of everything Palm Springs was back in the late 60s, which is the era David Buttry, Poppy’s creator, was inspired from for this collection (he specifically mentioned 1968-1971 and the famous Slim Aarons Poolside Gossip photo). Part of her inspiration was also Priscilla Presley, back in that era. Unfortunately, the doll lacks the raven hair colour of Priscilla, thus becoming one more big haired blonde Poppy, of which we have hundreds. The face screening is definitely Bergdorf Goodman - ground breaking. The dress is gorgeous, but does not justify the hefty price tag, even with the lovely new jewellery design. She is beautiful though, which was the reason I almost had her under consideration for pre-ordering, until Sparkling Sunset appeared.

Since she has just a short dress, they should have added some more bang for the buck - where are the liquor bottles and cocktail glasses we got with previous doll from this collection? At least she has a full suit eof jewellery and a lovely barrel bag, a very popular style of the era.

A wide-brimmed hat to protect her from the sun and a coordinating festive pastel ensemble was all it took for Poppy to be the prettiest blossom at the Palm Springs Garden Club!

This is the underdog of the collection. She reminds me a lot of Poppy Go See from the Model Scene collection. A suit, even in a pastel colour like this, is not what I would associate with a young woman in Palm Springs, even moving in the social scene and art gallery crowd as David mentioned during the presentation. I am sure older ladies in Palm Springs wore suits like this, but it looks a bit off on Poppy. At least she does not have straight hair with a middle part, although the pulled back hairline is a bit severe.

She comes with a hat in a matching print to her bodysuit, cute earrings, a quartet of colourful bracelets, pink mules with a horse bit (Gucci anyone?0 and a matching bag - if it had a horse bit decoration too, it would have been perfect. The mule means she has the articulated ankle feet, contrary to Golden Glow’s high heeled feet.

The Story:

As Poppy Parker stepped out into the last rays of sunlight, ready for an elegant dinner and evening out on town, everyone couldn’t help but notice that her coral gown matched the hues of the setting sun perfectly. It was as if Palm Springs itself was giving her its seal of approval!

One of the best dolls in the collection is Sparkling Sunset Poppy. She wears a lovely empire waisted gown of embroidered satin, that tapers at the bottom. It certainly brings to mind the one worn by Moonlight And Kisses Darla. And is it a coincidence that this Poppy has the same platinum blonde hair and brown eyes as Baby It’s You Poppy that was released along the aforementioned Darla? David said she started with a different dress way back when he first begun working on the collection.

The dress also reminds me lot of the Breakfast At Tiffany’s pink cocktail dress worn by Audrey Hepburn and of course, by both her doll incarnations by Mattel and Integrity Toys. The glamorous jewellery would certainly not be out of place in that film. The clutch is cute but the shoes are a bit of a let down - why not do something like Roger Vivier’s pilgrim pumps with diamante buckles? I love the doll and am happy to be confirmed for her.

Sergio is always a feast for the eyes and this appearance is no exception! He is totally inspired by a guy appearing in one of Aaron Slim’s Palm Springs poolside photos - and also channels the infamous prototype Sugar Daddy Ken, not produced by Mattel. I was quick to add him to my pre-order because he’s fabulous. The jacket’s print is the same as the ice bucket’s from Resort Ready Poppy Parker. and also matches the lining of his tote and his swimming trunks.

Yes you read correctly, he comes with more than one look. A suit, a swimsuit, two shirts, a pair of horse-bit moccasin shoes (Gucci?), a pair of slides, a tote and a golden (of course) watch,, to match his golden rimmed sunglasses. He is so gorgeous that I can overlook the fact that his look is not that far from his Brazilian appearance, no?

The Story:

Poppy had a fantastic opportunity to participate in a new ad campaign for "Drink Me" cola. She was so excited to be a part of the project! It would include not only a print ad for magazines but also a nationwide commercial! The theme of the campaign involved beloved storybook characters drinking the popular soda pop brand, and with Poppy’s love of reading and drinking cola, she thought this was the perfect fit for her. Once she stepped foot on the wonderfully decorated set and tried on her fabulous costume, she knew she had made the right decision!

It seems to me that the first W club doll this year took forever to appear! Has it ever been this late before? Oh dear Alice you are so late that the White Rabbit looks positively punctual compared to her! I would have preferred a doll like this to appear either as part of Nu Fantasy or another themed collection - definitely not as one of our five club dolls. Adorable and cute as she is, she failed to attract my interest in acquiring her. Even reading the email was perfunctory. With pricing as it is now, I will have to pass on this - not something I usually do with club dolls. On the positive side, her face looks gorgeous and the screening looks new to me. People said that the rabbit can be found on AliExpress, so you can have one without the added doll costs. Alice has been done to death from all major doll companioes in every size and iteration possible, so adding another one to the list, beautiful as she is, does nothing for me.

"Stay Tuned": the online event for Integrity Toys is announced - plus a new Poppy!

In mid July, Integrity Toys announced the initial details about their special online event that will take place in p;ace of the traditional online convention structure for this year only. Currently expected to take place sometime later this Fall (exact start dates will be shared closer to the launch of the special event), Integrity Toys will be breaking news about some new dolls that will be unveiled each day, which will be available to W Club members via a variety of methods (RTB lottery, made-to-order, etc.).

So this year’s theme is “Stay Tuned”: every doll shown during the event will be inspired by different TV show genres of the ’60s and beyond. Everyone in the W Club gets the chance to participate, no registration fee is required and nothing will be immediately time sensitive. No pre-registration fee is required to participate: all 2022 W Club members will be able to attend.

Here's what attendees can expect during this event:

Daily unveilings: a short “newsflash” and/or presentation each day unveiling a new doll or dolls from the various Integrity Toys brands (exact brands to be announced, not all IT brands will be present at the event);

Dolls will available via a variety of purchase methods: the dolls offered during the event will be made available either via a right-to-buy lottery or will be made-to-order, on a case-by-case basis. Depending on the purchase method of each doll, attendees will be guaranteed access to some items, while others will be more limited and available via the right-to-buy lottery method. Exact details will be outlined in each offer email on the day of release of each new event doll;

Limit one per membership: each product offered will be limited to either one pre-order per doll per membership, or one lottery entry per doll per membership, depending on the purchase method.

Stay Tuned... more details will be sent closer to the event. I am guessing this is to streamline the doll presentations and purchases, based on previous online conventions. Truth is that they tried to give the online events the feel of the convention but it never worked out. I hope this runs more smoothly and - since many dolls will be made to order - people will be more satisfied.

To kick things off, Integrity Toys gives us the first preview doll connected to this year’s theme; Poppy Parker as she would have looked had she starred in her very own TV series simply called “We Love Poppy” (I Love Lucy is the inspiration of course), at a time when every TV set in the nation was in black and white!

Designed by Integrity Toys designer Mark Tinkey (who for years has been closely working with David Buttry), this Poppy Parker doll features a special "grey gradient” colour scheme* to simulate the way an early 1960s TV audience would have seen her in their living rooms for the very first time. Every W Club member got the chance to pre-order this doll.

 *Note: Only this first doll related to the special event will be done in grey gradient; the other dolls will have various skin tones and coloration.

The idea of the “grey” doll is not new of course. And no, I’m not talking about Monster High you people! If you remember, there was a similar version of Gene Marshall presented back in 2007, during the “Rare Deal” Gene Marshall convention, organised by Integrity Toys and Mel Odom. They had asked doll designers to make OOAK b&w doll clothes for Gene, to be auctioned off on dolls for charity during the convention - but nobody knew what the dolls looked like. The dolls turned out to be a grey-scale version of Gene (from this blog), much like Poppy looks like in this incarnation. Due to their being so rare, they are much sought after. JamieSHOW did a resin version for the 2015 convention and Gene’s 20th anniversary. Two years later they did a similar Trent for their “East Meets West" convention. It looks otherworldly but she’s beautiful and different enough to warrant getting her - if she was in normal colours, I would definitely pass. She does remind me of Lucille Ball back in the day and also has a hint of Wandavision about her! Mark Tinkey photographed her along other Poppies to show how she looks in real life.
