Last time we saw a pair of Jason Wu designed Poppy Parker dolls was back in 2020 with the 20th Anniversary collection. Now we get two new ones, available only through lottery to W Club members. Both are wearing Spring 2021 Jason Wu outfits in miniature and have one more thing in common: freckles. I am not crazy about freckles in dolls, as they always look out of scale and cartoony to me. But that is just a matter of taste. As for the styling and fashions…

I would have loved this face without the freckles - even though her eyeshadow looks like she has stye. Pinks and reds are always risky as eyeshadows. The outfit is not what I would have associated with Jason Wu, if I saw it on a photo without a caption. Sporty and relaxed, it is not what I usually look for in dolls, especially expensive Jason Wu designed ones. And while the miniature sandals look very realistic, they give off cheap tourist vibes. I imagined this one without the freckles and in a yellow tailored outfit. Sigh.

Keeping up with the sorbet colours, this one is in deep pink, still with the dreaded freckles and still sporting an outfit that is great on a human visiting the Acropolis in the summer but I do not want it anywhere near my dolls, especially the sandals. Surprisingly, this one looks better on the doll than on the model. Speaking of which, why not this one being AA like the model too? Would have been so much more interesting. This one might look better worn open at the front, over slack striped pants and a cropped top, paired of course with different style sandals. I think it is time that if Jason designs another Poppy, we should get something with the caliber of Bergdorf Goodman Poppy. The “rich lady on a trip to Hydra island” style is tired. Look how Jacquemus does summer.

New Basic Edition dolls by Integrity Toys available now!

We knew there were new basic edition dolls coming from Integrity Toys since last year, and here they are at last. They were unveiled to club members last Friday and come from various Integrity Toys brands and designers. And guess what? Not only they are now available for purchase, they ship right after you pay for them too. No waiting, no preorder - almost instant gratification.

So what are basic edition dolls you say? The company says this:

“For those unfamiliar with the concept, unlike most other Integrity Toys dolls that are more elaborate in detail and more limited in nature, Basic Edition dolls are the best way for both new and seasoned collectors alike to be able to buy beautiful Integrity Toys dolls to dress up and play with! They tend to have a lower price point and a much larger edition size (which sometimes includes restocking*) that make them more accessible to the general public.”

The basic dolls have had a variety of names throughout the years, most usually Close Up dolls. And yes, they are a great way to be introduced to what the company has to offer, at a lower price than their usual offerings - even though nowadays the price is closer to what regular line dolls were back then. I was expecting that either Veronique or Vanessa would get the basic doll spot for the Fashion Royalty line, but Natalia beat them to it. She’s good looking but not a doll that I’d characterise as “have to get”, especially if one already has similarly styled/coloured Natalias. The bathing suit and jewellery are referencing the one worn by Ocean Drive Agnes, very Versace. Good to see the price still at $99.00.

I still do not like this sculpt, it has never reached its full potential so far. It does not help that the prototype doll is wonky eyed - I hope they fix this in production. Her swimsuit looks gorgeous and so do her platform sandals. The Cleopatra vibes are strong with this one.

A dark haired Poppy is not what one would expect for a basic doll release, since traditionally the blonde ones are more popular. And since the first one had brown hair, I was expecting this one to be blonde, even though the combination here is better: black hair, hungarian skin tone and brown eyes. Delicious. The dress has the same print as Double Agents Poppy’s dress.

Erin was very much expected to appear soon as she has been gone a while. Probably the most beautiful of the basic dolls of this wave, she reminds me a lot of High End Envy Erin, which is one of my favourite Erin releases. The dress is recreating the one worn by Mademoiselle Lilith Blair doll. And if seeing such an elaborate dress on a basic doll strucks you as unusual, you have not seen the accompanying accessory pack yet - with the slightly more expensive price of this doll plus the pack, you pay the price of a regular release doll. I can’t say I like this but it still gives people the opportunity to get a gorgeous doll for less, if they can skip the extras.

The tights are a staining danger as well. Love the bejewelled bow.

The 2023 W Club registration period is open!

It is the end of February and that can only mean one thing: the 2023 W Club registration is open! If you want to be a member of the W Club, make sure to register by 9 PM ET on Tuesday, March 21st. Go here if you are anxious to do so and come back to read what I think about the dolls below. You can register for as many memberships as you want and pre-order 1, 2 or all 3 of the upgrade dolls per membership for an additional fee before the deadline passes. In addition to the first-to-know information, members-only forum, online chats, priority customer service and special events, W Club members will receive the following opportunities:

1. Five additional W Club exclusive made-to-order dolls guaranteed throughout the year (W Club cannot guarantee which lines they will be from or how many from which line, but they are currently expecting that these will come from Poppy Parker, Fashion Royalty, NU. Face and/or NU. Fantasy during 2023).

2. Special pricing for most IT Direct releases that are also made available to the public. This is for most, not all of the items. There may be some items excepted, including but not limited to collaboration projects or sales outside of Integrity’s control, such as through dealers.

3. Priority access to register for the smaller, in-person event expected to take place Summer 2023. So this year Integrity Toys will have an in-person event again. In the presentation they mentioned it will be small and held in the Washington D.C. area sometime this summer. One of the event dolls, in a colour variation, will be available for all W Club members, attending or not. I’m guessing a 100-person luncheon with two or three dolls available to attendees. Upgrades have the same price as last year, so I am guessing the same happen for the dolls released in 2023.

It was a major surprise to almost everyone, myself included, when we discovered that all three upgrade dolls were colour variations of previously released dolls. Jessy mentioned that he wanted to revisit dolls from the past that had their moment in a particular release, and offer them in different colours. This will appear again in 2023, not as a coherent collection, but as releases spread throughout the year. While the idea is certainly appealing when the dolls are grails that are beyond what most people can now afford to buy, the whole concept looks lazy and uninspired. If, as they have done in the past, they re-interpreted older dolls in a fresh and inspiring way, I am guessing it would have gone down much better. And if this is a way for the company to save money, it could certainly have been better handled. Alejandra has been whitewashed completely here - while her previous two versions were darker, this one is FR white. I still think the original is better looking but I am happy that people who could not get her then, as she was a dealer exclusive, have their chance now. One other thing: when a character is only on its third ever release, it sucks a bit to get a repeat. They should have kept Alejandra for one of the five club exclusives and have another NU Face, like Erin, as the upgrade.

The Story: Collector-favorite Eugenia is invoking all the beauty of a Summer Rose in this gorgeous twist on "English Rose" from the 2019 Integrity Toys Live From Fashion Week Convention!

Eugenia is a character we often get as an upgrade - Le Tuxedo in 2020, Modernist in 2018, plus Reigning Grace as the Cinematic convention upgrade in 2015. This one is a colour variation of a convention doll, English Rose from the 2019 Live From Fashion Week event. The OG doll was dressed in pale pastels, with dark hair (reminding me of Vivacité Eugenia) and her bag was embroidered instead of textured. The fabric of the original blouse looked like crepe and her barrette had a short tulle veil. She reminds me both of Tuxedo and Going Public (just a bit), and also of Secret Garden a bit, if she went darker. Good for those that missed one of the aforementioned dolls in the first place. I do not like the skirt print, it looks dated and not what one of the Perrins would wear going out.

The Story: When Poppy walked by the window of her favorite boutique, Lemieux, and saw her prized "Powder Puff" peignoir set in a dreamy yellow color, she just couldn't pass it up! And of course, her teddy bear, Plato Parker, had to come along, too!

The original Powder Puff Poppy was released as a lottery doll in the 2016 BonBon collection, which makes this the variant with the oldest connection - albeit of a quite near past. And she is actually the third colour variant, as there was a pink one as the giveaway in the 2019 Poppy Parker event, which had two colour variant Poppy dolls. Unlike the baby blue OG, the teddy bears of both later variants are white, with the latest one smiling ominously. The actual doll is the best of the three, in her dark skin tone, but she reminds me too much of both Milan Poppy and Resort Ready to entice me. Something tells me that I am going to buy less IT dolls this year, if this trend continuous - last year was the first ever that I pre-ordered only one of the five exclusives. Again, while these three are all beautiful dolls, they don’t entice me, as an older collector, to upgrade my club membership. On the other hand, I am glad that many people are getting variations of grails they cannot afford otherwise. And that can only be a good thing.

Dolly Fridays 3: The 5th W Club doll is... another Poppy Parker!

We knew that the final Dolly Friday offering was the fifth and final W Club Exclusive doll. Everyone was expecting a Fashion Royalty or NuFace character, since the first line especially has been mostly absent this year (bar a few dolls in side projects like the witches or Magia 2000). Imagine everyone’s surprise when the email arriving from the W Club and Integrity Toys unveiled another Poppy Parker doll. The catch supposedly is that she's the first ever Poppy Parker doll designed by Jessy Ayala, who usually designs Fashion Royalty and NU Face dolls. I’m guessing this is because David Buttry, who is the Poppy Parker designer par excellence, did the NU Face club doll a few months back? The thing is, no matter who did what, did we really need another Poppy in a year that had a full collection of that line properly presented, plus two club dolls and a smattering of online event releases as well?

Jessy has done a great job with this Poppy. The outfit is kind of between the proper Poppy era and something that you could find in a fashion collection these days, treading a fine balance. I like the choice of materials and colours. Also it is nice that she comes with both sets of feet and two pairs of shoes - one of them again the Valentino style platform pumps with the ankle strap. The monogrammed bag is awesome as well. I could do without the velvet hair band - it is usually something older women than Poppy wear and personally it reminds me of an awful Greek politician lady, who has made it her trademark. The doll herself looks beautiful and fresh - giving me lots of Gigi Hadid vibes. She has the Bergdorf screening but with the strong eyebrow colour that we saw in the Jason Wu Poppy dolls a while ago. I have not ordered any of the previous four club dolls this year (a first for me), but I just might get this one. I have a week to mull it over.

Stay Tuned Day 4: Poppy Parker does Mary Tyler Moore - Miss Independence

The penultimate day of the Integrity Toys online event “Stay tuned (replacing the convention for 2022) brought W Club members another lottery opportunity for a doll. Again the doll is Poppy Parker, the third of this event if you count the one offered during the event announcement back in August. Did we need one more Poppy? Especially in a year that had a full Poppy collection offered to everyone? I’d say no. I know that miss PP has become the company cash cow but Integrity is not only Poppy Parker. We want our NU Face and Fashion Royalty dolls too.

The new Poppy is called "Miss Independence" and is obviously inspired by Marlo Thomas and her TV series “That Girl”.

So here is Miss Independence: a cute Poppy, a Marlo Thomas lookalike - which is good. She does have a look that harks back to the early Poppy dolls, both because of her overall styling and her outfit. Pity that she also reminds me a lot of Pretty Bird Poppy. If she had the blue and red suit Marlo Thomas is wearing in the series opening credits, she’d be more desirable. And the hat is an old staple of Poppy, I must have at least five or six in various colours. Painted hands instead of the glove hand sculpt? High heeled extra pair of feet without shoes to match? Her screening is almost the same with Sparkling Sunset. Cute but not gorgeous, for me at least.
